Cherry Valley Pumping Station

The Agency operates the Little San Gorgonio Creek Recharge Facility, on Orchard Street in Cherry Valley. The facility includes six ponds in which State Project Water is placed to percolate into the ground to recharge the Beaumont groundwater basin. The facility was partially funded by a Prop 13 grant from the State of California and the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority. State Project Water is pumped to the facility via the East Branch Extension. The Cherry Valley Pump Station, located at the corner of Orchard Street and Taylor Street, is the terminal pump station on the Extension.

The East Branch Extension begins at Devil Canyon Power Plant in San Bernardino (near the Cal State, San Bernardino campus) and traverses the cities of San Bernardino, Highland, and Yucaipa before crossing into Riverside County. It then traverses the City of Calimesa and the community of Cherry Valley before ending near the intersection of Orchard Street and Noble Street.

East Branch Extension.  The East Branch Extension, or EBX, is the portion of the State Water Project that conveys water to the Pass area.  It begins at the Devil Canyon Power Plant in San Bernardino and ends on Noble Street just south of Orchard Street in Cherry Valley.  The California Department of Water Resources decided to add the EBX to the State Water Project in the 1990’s.  The project was a partnership between the Department of Water Resources (DWR), the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, (Valley District), and the Agency.  Construction of Phase 1 was completed in March 2003.

The project consists of several miles of pipeline, three pumping stations (Greenspot Pump Station in Highland, Crafton Hills Pump Station in Mentone, and Cherry Valley Pump Station in Cherry Valley), and one operational reservoir (Crafton Hills Reservoir, a 90-acre-foot reservoir in Yucaipa).  The project was constructed to take approximately one-half of the Agency’s State Water Project allotment of 17,300 acre-feet per year.

The EBX is operated by the Agency and Valley District under an agreement with the Department of Water Resources.

Little San Gorgonio Creek Recharge Facility.  The Agency operates the Little San Gorgonio Creek Recharge Facility on Orchard Street in Cherry Valley.  The facility consists of six ponds that recharge State Water Project water into the Beaumont Basin.  This was the first recharge facility constructed in the Beaumont Basin, and has been operated since 2003 when it first came online.  Water recharged in this facility is used solely to offset overdraft in the basin.  The Agency constructed this facility with the help of a grant from the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority .

East Branch Extension Phase 2.  Phase 2 of the East Branch Extension is designed to allow the Agency to take its full allotment of 17,300 acre-feet of State Water Project water.  The Environmental Impact Report for this project was certified in 2008 and it is currently in final design.  The planned online date is 2013.

The project is designed to eliminate a “bottleneck” in the existing EBX where it crosses the Santa Ana River.  Virtually the entire project is located in Mentone.  It consists of approximately six miles of 66-inch and 72-inch pipeline, a new 560-acre-foot reservoir (Citrus Reservoir), a new 135-cfs pump station (Citrus Pump Station), and installation of an additional pump at Cherry Valley Pump Station to increase the capacity to 52 cfs.
